An Evening Of: Horror

We will dive into despair, loneliness, anger, contempt, and—above all—fear. These are the emotions we’re not supposed to feel or want, but which nevertheless attract us.
We embark on a journey into a melancholic world through a blend of readings and intimate music, featuring texts by Edgar Allan Poe and classical compositions by Debussy, Mussorgsky, Firtich, and Drukh. We will travel back to the origins of modern horror stories and horror music, to experience the beginnings of our fascination with these emotions that we have since learned to hide.

An Evening Of: Fairytales
//
To endure the world’s incomprehensibilities and observe them through imagination and openness.
A journey through the streets of Copenhagen, where the living world of H.C. Andersen comes into bloom. Through a window we glimpse a shepherdess and a chimney sweep, filled with longing and a hope that the world, vast and beautiful, might redeem us. Fake news and our need to dramatize reality in an attempt to create meaning makes us resemble Hen’s more than humans. And the despair of witnessing, through a little girl with her matchsticks, that the world is not just.
Claude Debussy brings longing and grandeur with his composition Clair de Lune; Jean-Philippe Rameau frames the mania of rumor with his “The Hen,” and Prokofiev waltzes us into love while Shostakovich waltzes along, laughing. All of it is framed by the wandering music of Jan Sibelius, guiding us from story to story.

An Evening Of: Love
//
Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? thou art more lovely, more temperate. The paths of love are unfathomable, ardent, tender, beautiful. This music-dramatic concert takes us through love’s many facets, from infatuation to passion. To give one’s heart away is beautifully sung by Inger Christensen in the poem “Then Take My Heart,” while the character Benedick insists he could never fall in love, love is for fools. Sarah Kane hungers for love in Crave, and Shakespeare shows us the beauty of love.
Bach, Chopin, and Rachmaninov guide us through longing, fascination, and the ebb of love. Through Schumann, the lovers ask each other: Warum? Defalia dances with passion, and Gershwin plays with confident brilliance in his Rhapsody in Blue. An evening filled with tension and love - and a beating heart!
